Another explanation paints a slower picture. Venus possesses an extraordinarily dense atmosphere. Powerful winds circle the planet at remarkable speeds. Over immense stretches of time, those atmospheric forces may have interacted with the planet's rotation, gradually slowing it before reversing its direction.
